Kodak Steps into the InkJet Printing Arena

On Tuesday Feb 6th 2007, Kodak announced it’s new line of inkjet printers and low cost inks. With a line of three printers ranging from about 150.00 to 300.00 dollars Kodak is going to definitely turn some heads. While the printers are a little bit more expensive than competitors models, by about 50 bucks, the ink cartridge are expected to be about half the cost of competitors models. The expected retail for them is about 10.00 for black and 15.00 bucks for color.
The big question now is if and how the competitors like Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Epson and Lexmark will respond to Kodaks new presence. They have always run a business model all about giving away the printer and charging a bundle for the inks. Could this revolutionalize the market? Could this finally drop the ridiculous costs of ink across the board? I sure hope so.

According to an Associated Press report found on MSN

The cost-per-page is at least “half the standard price” compared with the leading rival, Pohlman said. “For every $15 spent on color ink, you can get 105 Kodak 4-by-6 photos compared to the leading competition where you can only get 48. For black-and-white documents, for $10 you can get 349 pages versus 145 for the leading competition.”

This definitely catches my attention and I’ll be watching this closely to see how it effects the market. As a consumer I think this is a turn in a very good direction. Hopefully others will follow suit. Now I just have to do some research on the printer models to see what people think of them. Quality of prints is going to be a HUGE factor in how well they succeed with this new business model.
