Labeling Your Layers in Photoshop

Over the last week I have been working with the head graphic designer on some website landing pages for promotions we have coming up. This has given me the opportunity to spend a lot of time in Photoshop and specifically a lot of time working with layers. During one of our meeting the designer and I got into a discussion about one of her pet peeves. The pet peeve is when someone builds a Photoshop file and doesn’t bother to label the layers. I laughed and thought to myself, “how important could that possibly be?” Well after she showed me some of the files that the she had received from another design, I got to see first hand how frustrating it could be. So I made a promise to her and to myself to make sure that I always label my layers when I work in Photoshop.

While helping the designer with one of the landing pages for the website I was able to make good on my promise. As I built the Photoshop file I took the little bit of extra time and I labeled each of my layers. Not only was this a simple task but it probably saved me tons of time when I got to the revisions stage of the project. I was able to find the specific layers I needed and move quickly to make the changes. I found the answer to my question I had asked earlier. Labeling your layers IS important. Doing so allows your files to be clean and organized. As creative professionals we all know the importance of organization. Labeling your layers may take a little extra time but I promise you that doing so will cause you a lot less head aches in the long run. It is so simple and yet it is so easy to neglect.

Here is how you name your labels…

1. Open your layers pallet under Windows - Layers or F7.

Open Layers Pallet

2. Double click on layer name you wish to rename (ex. Layer 1)

Double Click to Rename

3. Type in new layer name that helps describes the layer.

Rename Layer

4. Follow same steps to rename the other layers.
