Nike+Apple: The Super Sports Team
It was announced yesterday that two corporate giants are now collaborating to bring running and iPods together for the athletic consumer. Nike is launching a shoe that will be able to communicate with Apple’s iPod Nano. Sounds like something out of a futuristic science fiction movie. Well it’s not. It’s here right now!
As a runner I find this new to be exciting. Having a single device that can record my distance, time, calories burned AND play my music would be awesome. I think the thing that really surprised me was the fact that it isn’t that expensive. The shoes don’t appear to be any more expensive than what they would normally cost and the kit to get the two communicating is only about 30 bucks. Of course in my case I would have to upgrade to an iPod Nano because I am still using an iPod Mini. So that would be a bit of an expense just for a cool way for two things to communicate to each other.
According to the news release from Apple…
“The new Nike+ Air Zoom Moire is the first footwear designed to talk to iPod. Nike plans to make many of its leading footwear styles Nike+ ready, connecting millions of consumers to the Nike+iPod experience. With the Nike+ footwear connected to iPod nano through the Nike+iPod Sport Kit, information on time, distance, calories burned and pace is stored on iPod and displayed on the screen; real-time audible feedback also is provided through headphones. The kit includes an in-shoe sensor and a receiver that attaches to iPod. A new Nike Sport Music section on the iTunes® Music Store and a new nikeplus.com personal service site help maximize the Nike+iPod experience.”
They are also saying that this is just the start of Nike products that are going to work with Apple’s iPod. It is going to be real interesting to see what else Nike+Apple have up their sleeve. I know I’ll be watching closely.
First cars that communicate with iPods and now this. I have to think that pretty soon EVERYTHING is going to be communicating. Every piece of electronic hardware is going to be interconnected with every other piece of electronic hardware. It sure seems like there is no limit to what can happen. Nike and Apple are showing us that.
