Photoshop CS: Color Correction With Channels

Today I was brought a job from the production floor that needed to have cyan eliminated from part of the logo. This was required so that the logo didn’t look so muddy and dark. The client had requested that the yellow in the logo stand out.

This is how I was able to eliminate the cyan from the logo using channels in Photoshop CS.

1. This is a piece of the original logo and how it looked. You can see that it has a greenish blue tint to it rather than the nice clear yellow.

2. First step I took was to open the “Channels” pallet. It is found under “Windows” and then “Channels”.

3. You can see that all of the channels are now being shown and they are all selected. We want to eliminate just some of the Cyan, so we need to select just that channel. You can do this by clicking once on that specific channel. As you can see below, all the channels except the Cyan are hidden. This allows you to edit just the cyan in the logo.

4. This is a shot of how your file will appear when just the Cyan is selected. It makes the file appear in grayscale, only showing the specific channel.

5. Next we will start to eliminate some of the Cyan. I chose to do this with the “Eraser” tool. You can also use the selection tool to select the areas you want to eliminate and then hit delete.

6. In this specific case, I only erased the grey areas with in the black border because I wanted the border to remain a solid black color on the final image. Below is a shot of how my Cyan channel ended up after editing it.

7. Once you have made the edits to your Cyan layer, you can click on the CYMK channel to see how the final results appear. You can do this as you are editing too, so you can see your progress. However, be sure to have the just the Cyan channel selected when you go back and continue your editing. Otherwise you will be editing all of the channels.

8. Here are the before and after images so you can see how elimination of the Cyan, improved the intensity of the yellow in this logo.
