STEP Cover Design Decision Made
I have been watching the STEP magazine cover design rounds that have been going on over at Be A Design Group. After six rounds of showing off there designs and taking criticism from the public, they have made a final decision. First of all let me say congratulations to Team 4 for being choosen!!
I was really impressed with the way Be A Design Group went through the process. It was really exciting to read the initial brief and then watch as 4 teams went at it. Each team wrote up an explaination of why they followed the path that they did and in the later rounds why they changed what they did. It was really interesting to read this information and kind of feel like you were getting inside the heads of the designers. Along with the teams writing their thoughts, many people chimmed in on what they liked and disliked about the covers. I think the thing that really impressed me was how well the teams handled themselves when it came to the criticism they received.
I myself made a judgement of Team 2’s cover based on a misunderstanding. A member of the team took the time to try to help me see things a little clearer without ridiculing me for not necessarily liking what they had done. Not only was I really impressed with the maturity of the team member but this individual showed amazing professionalism. I want to express my appreciation for this!
The concept on a whole was really an amazing one. On a personal level it opened up my eyes to the power of blogs and how they can be used to help designers through the design process. I would love to see more designer who blog use this technique to work through their own process. Obviously it will involve needing some pretty thick skin due to the fact that it is very much a bare all situation. However, I think the results would pay ten fold. Especially if you are able to pull from the comments of individual that are not designers.
I once was told by a very good friend of my on the Graphic Design Forum that some of the best and most honest feedback you will get is from a non-designer. They don’t have the tinted lenses that designers tend to have and therefor will see your design completely different. They also tend to see the design as the general public will see it. I think his words are wise and I have done exactly that on a few occassions. It has helped a lot.
Again, I must say congratulations to Team 4 on being choosen and I also must congratulate Be A Design Group on a successful series of great blog posts!
